When calculating staff ratios, do you count the clients being served at one given point in time? Or, do you use the total number of clients served by staff during the year?

Question:  When calculating staff ratios, do you count the clients being served at one given point in time? Or, do you use the total number of clients served by staff during the year?

Answer:

The staff to client ratio is meant to indicate caseload size and program intensity.   If your client to staff ratio varies throughout the year, you should provide an average ratio and likely explain that variation in your program description.
