ASSETS

ASSETS is an employment and training program for adults 55 years and older with limited income. It prepares participants for entry or re-entry into the competitive job market by offering vocational classroom training in such areas as computer literacy, general office skills, early childhood education, and customer service.

Multipurpose Senior Services Program (MSSP)

The goal of MSSP is to help seniors continue living safely and independently in their own homes. Each senior is assigned a nurse and social worker who assess needs and provide ongoing care management.

Oakland Paratransit for the Elderly and Disabled (OPED)

OPED offers paratransit services to residents of Oakland and Piedmont who cannot access public transportation and are age 70 and older, or 18 and older with a mobility disability. Taxis and wheelchair-lift vans provide transit to medical appointments, shopping and other activities.

Senior Companions & Foster Grandparents (SCP & FGP)

Senior Companions make a difference by being a friend to other older adults, and helping with grocery shopping and other daily tasks. Foster Grandparents help at-risk children and youth by giving them much needed attention, advice on life issues, and help with their studies. Volunteers who are income-eligible receive small stipends and community recognition for their dedication and service.

Linkages

Linkages connects disabled adults (18 years and older) and frail older adults to community-based programs, enabling them to remain living in the community rather than in nursing homes.  Each client is assigned a social worker who assesses needs and provides care management.  In addition, information and referral services are provided to clients as well as other other residents of the East Bay.

Senior Centers

City sponsored senior centers in six locations provide a broad range of classes and special events, as well as free or low-cost meals. The Centers offer numerous opportunities for education, social interaction, recreation and community service.
