Project
Choice seeks to improve public safety by offering
hope, support and accountability to juvenile and
young adult offenders re-entering the Oakland community.
PROJECT CHOICE is a City initiative supporting
the successful reintegration of ex-offenders from
the criminal justice system back into the Oakland
community. Each year, the City of Oakland is home
to nearly 3,000 parolees, a large portion of who
return to prison. In 2001, the City launched Project
Choice to provide these returning ex-offenders
with the tools they need to become successful,
contributing members of the community. Successful
re-entry is a key component of the City of Oakland’s
public safety agenda and its commitment to building
strong, healthy communities. Investing in these
individuals not only helps them to succeed, but
also positively influences the young people who
witness their achievement, rather than their repeated
incarceration.
Project Choice participants are between the
ages of 16 and 30 years old returning to Oakland
from San Quentin State Prison and California
Youth Authority facilities in Stockton. Project
Choice offers these young and young adult parolees
an intensive coaching and case management relationship
that starts inside prison, at least 6-12 months
prior to release, and carries out into the
community and throughout their time on parole..
Project Choice is also working with community
agencies so clients have access to a full spectrum
of services including substance abuse treatment,
mental health services, intensive employment
and training support, health care, housing
and more.
